Chartiers Township police said three people are lucky to be alive after their car drove under a tractor-tailer Wednesday morning on Route 519 (Western Avenue) in front of the Washington County Firemen’s Association training grounds.

Sgt. Michael Filosi said a car driven by James Moss, 34, of Burgettstown, was going south just before 9:15 a.m. and did not see the tractor-trailer that had pulled onto the road from the training grounds.

“The driver said the sun was in his eyes and he absolutely did not see the tractor-trailer,” Filosi said.

The car went completely under the trailer, peeling off the roof.

“I think the car driver told me they ducked. They would have had to,” Filosi said. “When the car came out on the other side of the trailer, they just climbed out.”

Moss and his passengers, Alyssa Atkins, 25, of Washington, and Atkins’ 2-year-old daughter, Sayala Grinage, were taken to Canonsburg Hospital for treatment of cuts and minor injuries. The girl was in a car safety seat.

The truck driver, Stephen Ringer, 25, of Washington, was not injured.

Chartiers firefighters also assisted at the scene.
