State Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson, has introduced legislation that would prohibit employers from discriminating against a job applicant based on their family status.

“Under my legislation, House Bill 1984, employers would be prohibited from asking job applicants of any gender if they have children, plan to have children or are married,” Snyder said in a press release. “Such irrelevant and inappropriate questions have no place in Pennsylvania and its workplaces.”

Snyder said many people believe familial discrimination is illegal in Pennsylvania; however, there are no state or federal laws that prohibit the discrimination.

Families aren’t the only ones who suffer. Snyder said employers are missing out on “countless motivated, productive and valuable employees.”

House Bill 1984 was referred to the House Labor and Industry Committee, where Snyder serves as Democratic secretary.
