PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh police say a K-9 officer stabbed by a man being arrested on fugitive warrants remained in critical condition.

The 8-year-old dog, named Rocco, was injured Tuesday night when police arrested 21-year-old John Lewis Rush. Rush was one of Allegheny County’s most wanted fugitives because of warrants for probation violations and failing to register as a sex offender.

Police say Rush was arrested about 10:30 p.m., or about 40 minutes after he fought and got away from a sheriff’s deputy.

Police apprehended Rush, but not before they say he stabbed the dog in the back. The animal was being treated by a veterinarian. Two human officers also suffered leg and arm injuries.

Police spokeswoman Diane Richard says the dog, though still critical, was stable on Thursday and that his blood count was improving.
