The Better Business Bureau of Western Pennsylvania is warning cellphone users of a new scam that can result in unauthorized charges and international fees.

In the ‘One Ring’ scam, thousands of calls are sent to random cell phone numbers, which ring once before being disconnected.

Consumers have reported that the area codes are originating from Grenada (473), the Dominican Republic (809), Jamaica ( 876) the British Virgin Islands (284) and Antigua (268). Cellphone users who return the missed call are then charged $19.95 for the international call and an additional $9 per minute, according to a press release from the BBB.

While the BBB of Western Pennsylvania has not personally received complaints of the scam, they anticipate local cellphone users will be affected.

Anyone who feels they have been a victim of the scam should contact their cellphone provider and monitor bills for unauthorized charges.

To avoid the scam, the BBB suggests that cellphone users do not answer the phone or return calls from numbers they do not know.
