CARMICHAELS – Carmichaels Area School Board voted at a special meeting Thursday to authorize the district’s architect to solicit bids for the junior-senior high school renovation project.

The Hayes Design Group is expected to begin advertising the bids Feb. 17. Contracts can then be awarded in March to allow work to begin in April, Superintendent Craig Baily said Friday.

Work will first start with the construction of a new cafeteria and kitchen in the area between the junior high and senior high schools. The work should not impact the use of the buildings for classes through the end of the school year.

At the end of the school year, the junior high will be turned over to contractors to begin work. Next school year, while the junior high is under renovation, mobile classrooms will be used for classes that can’t be accommodated in the high school. After the junior high is finished, work will begin on the high school.

The board also approved the construction documents and a “probable cost” estimate for the junior-senior high renovations. The estimate had been prepared by a firm hired by the construction manager, Accelerated Construction Services, LLC.

The estimate was not released because of the impending bidding, but is within the original estimate prepared for the project, Baily said.

The district also plans to renovate the elementary building, which is not expected to be bid for about a year and half.

The project to renovate all three buildings was originally estimated by Hayes at between $23 and $25 million. A later estimate set the cost at $25.2 million. The district expects to receive about $7.4 million for the project from the state.

Motions to authorize the solicitation of bids and approval of the construction documents and probable costs were approved in a 7-1 vote. Board member Ed McIntire voted against the motions; board member Ron Ferek was absent.

The board also voted to seek proposals for cafeteria management. The contract for the current manager, Sodexo, expires at the end of June.
