WAYNESBURG – The Friends of Bowlby Library is preparing for its first wine-tasting fundraiser to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 8 at The Lodge at Rohanna’s.

The organization is made up of members who strive to help the local library. In the past, the group has helped with furniture, summer reading programs and a myriad of other needs geared mostly to the programs Bowlby provides for child readers of the community and surrounding area.

“This is our inaugural wine-tasting fundraiser, and we’re doing our best to make it an attractive gathering that folks will enjoy,” said Fran Hardy, president of the Friends of Bowlby Library.

Thistlewaite Vineyards and Shields’ Winery will be on hand to provide samples of their best wines. There also will be hors d’oeurves from The Lodge, door prizes from the Friends and music by Bob Podish.

With the financial trends and state cuts to local libraries in the past few years, it is becoming increasingly difficult for public libraries to provide the services communities expect of them. At the same time, their missions have become much more diverse, not just providing books to read, but new digital library services and materials such computers, programs for job searching, the affordable health care law and many more. Friends, with this fundraiser and its other activities, is just attempting to be one more aid in Bowlby Public Library’s service to the community.
