MAPLETOWN – Southeastern Greene School Board voted Monday to appoint the district’s assistant principal for kindergarten through 12th grade to the position of acting superintendent.

The board, at the continuation of a meeting recessed last month, appointed Richard Pekar to the post vacated by Superintendent William Henderson.

Henderson submitted his letter of resignation to the board in June after accepting the position of superintendent of Frazier School District.

His resignation was approved by the board last month. His last day in the district was Monday.

Pekar, who could not be reached Thursday for comment, is currently working on his superintendent’s certification, said district business manager Pat Sweeney.

Pekar is permitted to serve as acting superintendent for one year, he said.

This will apparently give the board time to consider its options.

Pekar, a Mapletown High School graduate, was hired by the board as assistant principal in September 2012. Prior to working at Southeastern Greene, he was principal of South Stokes High School in Meadow, N.C.

Pekar was hired for the newly created position of assistant principal for kindergarten through 12th grade to assist the district in addressing state mandates regarding teacher evaluations and in implementing the Common Core curriculum.

Henderson had served as district superintendent for four years. At the last meeting, he told the board it was “truly an honor and a privilege to serve” Southeastern Greene.

Henderson earlier said he decided to accept the position at Frazier because of the challenge.

Presented with the opportunity to serve as superintendent of a district with almost twice the number of students as Southeastern Greene is a “professional opportunity” he could not let pass, Henderson said.

Henderson said he also was already familiar with the Frazier School District. He worked in the Frazier School District earlier in his career for about seven years as a health and physical education instructor, athletic director and acting principal.

Henderson also noted Frazier, which has administrative offices in Perryopolis, is much closer to his home in Charleroi, and would be 20-minute commute compared to a 50-minute commute to Mapletown.

The board’s next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. July 28.
