Bowlby launches summer program
WAYNESBURG – This week marked the beginning of Summer Reading programs offered at the Eva K. Bowlby Public Library.
This year’s theme is “Fizz, Boom, Read!” and focuses on various science subjects. Both the Children’s and Family Literacy Departments are offering activities for youngsters enrolled over the next few weeks. Topics the children will be exploring this summer include geology, zoology, astronomy, physics, chemistry and meteorology.
As an added incentive, children are also given the opportunity to earn a free admission ticket to the Carnegie Science Center, planned for Aug. 8, by simply completing reading goals and activities at home. The Bowlby Library also offers an online Cyber Camp for those unable to attend all six weeks of programming.
The website is filled with games, crafts, activities and recipes related to the summer reading theme, “Fizz, Boom, Read!” The address is: http://bowlbysummercamps2014.weebly.com. All activities earn “book bucks,” which can then be spent on small prizes or saved for the Summer Reading Auction held at the end of the six-week program Aug. 15.
The library invites teenagers to stop at the library this summer to get involved in our “Spark a Reaction” program geared for 13- to 18-year-olds. Teens will have opportunities to explore various science topics using dry ice, lasers, model roller coasters, and more!
Adults are invited to participate in a summer reading program tailored just for grown-ups! “Literary Elements” is geared for adult readers and includes a suggested reading list from science fiction, classical fiction, stuff you should have read in high school and modern fiction. Through the month of July until Aug. 15, adult readers can read or listen to audiobooks to earn chances to win small prizes, and work toward winning the Grand Prize.
