Coal still burns brightly, which will be evident Wednesday during a rally to support national energy and jobs in coal and related industries.

The rally will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Highmark Stadium on Pittsburgh’s South Side, a short distance from Station Square.

A number of public officials will speak, including Govs. Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania and Earl Ray Tomblin of West Virginia, and Ohio Lt. Governor Mary Taylor – who are scheduled between 11:30 a.m. and noon. They will be followed by state legislators from the tri-state region.

Thousands are expected to attend the rally, which will focus on affordable energy. It was organized by the Pennsylvania Coal Alliance, The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity and the National Miners Association.

The event will take place the day before the Environmental Protection Agency has public hearings on its proposed emissions regulations for existing coal-fired power plants.

The Pennsylvania Coal Alliance said the regulations imperil an industry that provides tens of thousands of jobs nationally and has about a $4 billion impact in Pennsylvania.
