PITTSBURGH (AP) — Six protesters have been cited for trespassing for refusing to leave a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center building during a protest over lost union janitorial jobs.

UPMC officials aren’t commenting on Wednesday’s rally organized by the 32BJ Service Employees International Union.

Three union janitors, two union officials and a minister who were cited were among a group of protesters who went to UPMC’s Aiken Medical Building next to UPMC Shadyside Hospital on Wednesday morning. They were protesting because UPMC in June hired a company that uses non-union janitors to clean the building.

Pitcairn-based ServiceMaster, which uses union labor, lost the contract in May.

The protesters were cited and released.

They had staged a sit-in near the hospital entrance and also went inside the medical building.
