WAYNESBURG – A golf outing will be held Aug. 23 at Rohanna’s Golf Course to raise money for the Rocky Doman Memorial Scholarship Fund and the newly created Rocky and Nina Doman Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The four-man scramble will begin at 8 a.m. Green fees, cart fees, refreshments and a buffet dinner following the tournament at Rohanna’s Restaurant are included in the registration fee of $300 a team or $75 an individual.
All teams must register and pay the entrance fee by Aug. 15.
Family and friends of Rocky “Rock” Doman, who was killed in a gas-drilling accident in 2007, established the Rocky Doman Memorial Golf Outing as a means of raising money for a scholarship in his memory.
This year, the family has also established the Rocky and Nina Doman Memorial Scholarship Fund. Nina Doman, Rocky’s sister, died in 2005. They are the children of Robert and Patti Doman of Carmichaels.
Rocky Doman was a 2000 graduate of Carmichaels Area High School.
A three-year letterman in football from 1997 to 1999, Doman is one of only four Greene County players to be honored by the WPIAL for rushing for more than 4,000 yards. Doman amassed 4,145 yards and 56 touchdowns for the Carmichaels Mikes.
Doman went on to play two seasons at Waynesburg College before concussions put an end to his football career.
The Rocky Doman Memorial Scholarship is open to any graduating senior at one of the five Greene County high schools who is planning to pursue a degree at an accredited two-year or four-year institution and is a standout athlete.
Recipients also must exemplify the spirit of humility and that of a team player. Money raised is used to endow the scholarship fund at Greene County Community Foundation.
Nina Doman, who was a cosmetologist, had volunteered her time to teach youth cheerleading groups and worked with children doing competitive dance routines.
Nina and Rocky Doman both loved children. Nina had a son and Rocky worked with children with autism and disabilities before prior to taking a job in the natural gas industry.
The new scholarship will help students further their education. Money also will be used to help children whose families don’t have the money to pay registration fees to play youth sports or purchase the necessary equipment.
