Apparently, Ichiban was itching to make a presence in Washington County.

Ichiban Hibachi Steakhouse appears to be headed for the Old Mill project in South Strabane Township. A legal notice in the Wednesday edition of the Observer-Reporter said the township supervisors will have a public hearing Aug. 12 on an application for an inter-municipal transfer of a restaurant liquor license.

The company’s plans for Old Mill could not be confirmed Thursday. Neither corporate officials nor Sam Adler, leasing representative for TSG Properties of St. Louis, owner and developer of the site, was available for comment.

The license transfer application for 16 Old Mill Boulevard, however, indicates the firm’s intent to be the eighth tenant since Christmas to commit to the revived retail endeavor.

Ichiban specializes in Japanese cuisine. Sushi, steak and shrimp are among its signature items, along with tuna and chicken dishes.

It is establishing a foothold in the Pittsburgh region, most recently in Washington County. The South Strabane location would be the sixth in Southwestern Pennsylvania. and second in succession to open in Washington. Ichiban debuted April 8 in the Donaldsons Crossroads Shopping Center, Peters Township.

The chain also has restaurants in Cranberry, O’Hara and Robinson townships and Wexford.

Ichiban would be virtually across Route 19 from Fusion Japanese Steak House, which is in the Trinity Point development. It appears to be the 10th tenant heading to the Old Mill, a 104-acre retail development being built by Mosites Construction & Development Co. of Robinson.

Max & Erma’s, near the front of the site, is the only holdover from the Foundry project, where subsidence forced the three other businesses that located there to flee. Max & Erma’s was unaffected by land issues and another restaurant, Olive Garden, opened virtually next door in December 2012.

Ichiban will likely join them, along with seven other businesses that signed leases or otherwise committed to Old Mill since late December. They are: Hobby Lobby, Field & Stream, LongHorn Steakhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chick-fil-A, Anytime Fitness and Noodles & Co.
