An off-duty Washington police lieutenant escaped serious injury Wednesday afternoon when his motorcycle struck a vehicle that made a left turn in front of him on Racetrack Road at Meadow Drive.

North Strabane Township police said Roy Loeffert had been riding his motorcycle west on Racetrack when the other driver, John Tinney, 76, of Heidelberg, made a left turn from the eastbound lanes. Loeffert was unable to stop his motorcycle in time, police added. Witnesses told police that Tinney had a red light.

Loeffert was taken to Canonsburg Hospital to be checked as a precaution. Police expect to cite Tinney for a traffic violation.
