PITTSBURGH (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a Pittsburgh-area police officer for using a stun gun on a handcuffed suspect.
The Department of Justice says in a Wednesday release that 30-year-old Nicole Murphy of Pittsburgh has been charged over the September 2012 incident. Murphy is a member of the Millvale Borough Police Department.
Thomas Jason James Smith of Millvale had previously filed a federal lawsuit over the incident. A leaked video made by another Millvale employee showed Murphy using a stun gun on a shirtless Smith while he was handcuffed to a desk in the police station. Smith had been arrested for public drunkenness.
Millvale Police Chief Derek Miller and Officer Miller did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
