WAYNESBURG – A former county employee who pleaded guilty in October to stealing $615 from the prothonotary’s office where she was employed, was charged Thursday with 14 new counts of theft for writing bad checks.

Becky M. Cain, 35, of 211 Second Ave., was charged with writing 14 checks totaling $365.13 from an account with insufficient funds between Dec. 14 and Jan. 29.

Cain had been informed by the bank on Dec. 17 that the account had a negative balance and would be closed Dec. 31 if no deposits were made to the account, according to the criminal complaint filed by county chief detective Dave Lloyd.

She continued to write checks on the account and no deposits were made. The account was subsequently closed Jan. 7 with a negative balance of $1,189.34, the complaint said.

Cain pleaded guilty Oct. 15 to theft and other charges for stealing money from the prothonotary’s office between March 12, 2012, and Feb. 14, 2013. An investigation indicated she had voided receipts for cash payments that were made to the office and then pocketed the money.

Cain was sentenced at the October plea hearing to two years of probation. She is currently being held in Greene County jail on probation violations.

A hearing on the new charges is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. June 16 before District Judge Lou Dayich in Waynesburg.
