PITTSBURGH (AP) – A Western Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to one to two years in prison in a crash that killed a motorcyclist a year ago.
An Allegheny County judge imposed the mandatory term Thursday on 33-year-old Fremont Mathias Jr. of Monroeville.
Mathias pleaded guilty in March to homicide by vehicle, causing an accident involving injury or death, and other counts.
Police said he was behind the wheel of a pickup that collided head-on with a Harley-Davidson in June of last year, killing 69-year-old Lawrence Matvey of Monroeville.
Prosecutors said Mathias left the scene, saying he was searching for a lost dog, and later allowed his wife to take the blame.
Assistant District Attorney Chelsea Pratt said he had many chances to do the right thing “and he ignored all of them.”
