Woman arrested on drug charges
An Allegheny county woman was arrested Monday morning by Monongahela police after she was found with suspected cocaine when her truck was was stopped in New Eagle for not having three girls properly restrained.
Cheryl A. Campbell, 50, of 723 Ninth St., Elizabeth, was stopped about 10 a.m. by police near the intersection of Main and Elm streets after an officer saw her in a truck with a woman and two children in the cab. When they stopped her, a girl was found to be sitting on the floor.
Campbell told police she was taking the woman and girls, ages 9, 12, and 15, to her house because they were evicted from their New Eagle home.
Police told Campbell she could not be driving the truck because her license was expired and she had too many people and not enough safety restraints.
The officer asked Campbell if there was anything in the vehicle. She told him there was not and told him he could search the truck. Police saw the 9-year-old, who was still in the truck, holding a purple bag.
When police asked the girl what was in the bag, Campbell answered for her, telling the officer it was “computer stuff.” The girl shrugged her shoulders and Campbell took it.
Inside, police found a plastic bag containing two smaller bags containing a white powder. Campbell told police it was cocaine, claiming she bought it in Clairton. She also told police her passengers did not know she had the drug. Police also found one Oxycodone pill and more than $300 in the bag.
Campbell was arraigned before District Judge Mark Wilson on three counts of endangering the welfare of children and possession of cocaine, two counts of possession with intent to deliver cocaine, and one count each of possession of paraphernalia, driving without a license, failure to have passengers restrained and a turning signal violation. She was placed in Washington County jail on $50,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for July 10 before Wilson.
