Commissioners in South Fayette Township will hold a public hearing in July to discuss a draft flood ordinance for the township. The update to the ordinance is mandated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Township engineer Mike Benton at last week’s meeting presented a spreadsheet of areas in the township that are flood-prone and have issues with stormwater runoff, including areas that flooded badly during heavy rains last July.
“It’s an ongoing challenge,” said Ryan Eggleston, township manager. He said the staff is “trying to compile flooding issues throughout the township.” Eggleston added that there were more than 100 issues in the township. Although some have been resolved, many have not.
“Some longer-term or larger projects need to be done,” Eggleston said. “We are looking at a way to come up with a sustainable program to deal with those issues.”
In other business, Eggleston said there has been a change in the management structure of the township’s public works department. Sam Tranter, who had been director of public works, is no longer working at the township. Butch Truitt, current parks and recreation director, is heading up both departments. He had done so in his former job in Oil City.
