The woman who suffered an accidental gunshot to the stomach Wednesday night was injured when a handgun stored in a bedroom dresser unexpectedly discharged, Washington police said.

Dea Spencer, 48, of 256 Shirls Ave., was closing the drawer in an upstairs bedroom when the .25-caliber handgun fired one shot through the wood and struck her in the stomach shortly after 5 p.m., police said.

Medics treated Spencer at the scene and she was transported by ambulance to Washington Hospital. Her condition was not known and a hospital operator said they no longer had a record of Spencer as a patient. Police did not elaborate on the severity of Spencer’s wound to her stomach, but said it did not appear to be life-threatening.

Two other people in the house at the time, Diamond Spencer and Dusty Shultz, both 16, were not injured. Both were downstairs and thought the gunshot came from outside until they heard Dea Spencer calling for them to help her, police said. The two teens cared for Spencer until medics arrived at the scene.

Investigators said they found a hole in the dresser drawer and a spent casing inside.

Police did not expect to file any charges.
