Chartiers Township residents will get the chance to hear about two road projects in their community, one planned to start in the next few weeks and the other to begin in the fall, though the bulk of the work will be done in 2015.

A meeting to present information about the Allison Hollow Road improvement project is slated for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the township fire department social hall, 2450 W. Pike St.

The state Department of Transportation will host an open house meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. March 20 at the township building, 2 Buccaneer Drive, to discuss improvements to the intersection of West Pike Street and Country Club Road.

Last month, the supervisors awarded a $1.688 million contract to Morgan Excavating of Belle Vernon for a full-depth reconstruction of Allison Hollow from near West Pike where the PennDOT project stopped a few years ago to Kings Road. The work will include installing new drains and sewers.

The contractor is expected to start work as soon as the weather breaks, said township manager Jodi Noble. Construction is to be done no later than July 31.

“They will start doing prep work like clearing tree canopies and removing trees in the right-of-way,” Noble said.

The Pike/Country Club project includes widening both Pike and Country Club to provide turning lanes and improve the turning radius for trucks that use the intersection. The traffic signal and railroad crossing also will be replaced.

The project is tentatively scheduled to be let out for bid this June. Though some initial work involving drainage, utility relocation, building demolition and replacement of the railroad crossing will happen this year, most of the work will be done in 2015. The project should be done by the middle of July 2015.

The work will necessitate the closing of 625 feet of northbound Pike Street for about two-and-a-half months for the reconstruction and widening of Pike. Southbound Pike will remain open.

Northbound Pike traffic will be rerouted on Interstate 79 northbound at Manifold Road to Racetrack Road. The detour is expected to occur from April to mid-June of 2015.

Pike Street will close for one weekend to complete replacement of the at-grade crossing for the widened intersection. The closure is expected to happen between mid-September and mid-November of this year.

“It works well for traffic purposes that both projects will not be done at the same time,” Noble said.
