Day of Service to commemorate inauguration
WAYNESBURG – To commemorate the inauguration of Douglas G. Lee as Waynesburg University’s 15th president and the university’s longstanding tradition of service, the university will hold a Day of Service March 22 in the community and beyond.
Surrounding the March 25 Inauguration, the university will host a historic, multiday event, including the Day of Service. Students, faculty and staff will contribute service hours and activities at community organizations, including Greene County United Way, Humane Society, Red Cross SAFE Program, Rolling Meadows Nursing Home and many more.
“The Day of Service is a celebration of Waynesburg University’s commitment to servant leadership for almost two centuries,” said President Lee. “I’m excited to see the campus and community come together to help those in need.”
Others will create their own Day of Service initiatives tailored to students’ skills and interests.
Waynesburg nursing students partnered with Cornerstone Care “Dancing with a Pink Ribbon” to provide free clinical breast exams for campus and community members via the Cornerstone Care Mobile Medical Unit that day.
Open to the public, the unit will be located in front of the Waynesburg University gymnasium on Wayne Street from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the Day of Service. A nurse practitioner will perform the exams at no cost. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged. Call Sharon Heath at 724-852-1001 ex. 304 to sign up or for more information. The university’s English department hosted “Pass the Biscuits” at the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesburg Feb. 26 to raise money for Corner Cupboard Food Bank in Waynesburg in honor of the Day of Service. The students, faculty and staff raised $531 for the food bank, an amount matched by the Waynesburg Giant Eagle up to $500 for a total of $1,031.
Though the primary focus of the Day is Service to Greene County, Waynesburg University alumni are eager to unite with their alma mater through service in any location, including a 2009 alumna who will serve Moldova to help restore a home for human trafficking victims during the Day of Service. Registered alumni include a wide span of volunteers, with graduation years as early as 1955 and as recent as 2013, and service locations from North Dakota to New Hampshire.
The university is also accepting donations for the Salvation Army Day of Service project with drop-boxes across campus.
“The university embraces this day to direct the service focus to Greene County,” said Mary Fox, the university’s event planner. “As an institution based on service, the Day of Service will be a great way to celebrate our mission and our community.”
