PITTSBURGH (AP) — Transit police have been searching for a man charged with assaulting an officer and possessing drugs after he escaped from a Pittsburgh hospital where he was taken after complaining of an injury following a police chase.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County says 52-year-old Roger Cunningham remained at-large early Friday, since escaping from UPMC Mercy hospital Thursday night.

Port Authority police have charged Cunningham with possessing heroin and allegedly attacking an officer who had stopped a vehicle in which Cunningham was a passenger earlier that day.

Police took Cunningham to the hospital after he complained of a back injury. Police say hospital officials planned to keep Cunningham overnight after he threatened suicide, only to have Cunningham escape.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center officials say they aren’t responsible or empowered to detain prisoners, who remain the responsibility of police.
