U.S. Steel plans layoffs

PITTSBURGH (AP) — U.S. Steel Corp. is laying off an undisclosed number of Pittsburgh employees to cut costs.

The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker says in a Friday statement that there will be layoffs there and in other locations, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

U.S. Steel spokeswoman Courtney Boone says the layoffs involve employees in operations and business support functions. The company has about 5,000 employees in the Pittsburgh area and about 37,000 worldwide.
