Several railroad cars on a Norfolk Southern train derailed Sunday morning on tracks in a remote wooded area about two miles east of Rogersville.

The train was hauling coal and traveling east on the tracks. Company crews brought heavy equipment in and were accessing the area from property along Route 21 across from the Rogersville Cemetery. Workers on scene declined to comment.

David Pidgeon, a spokesman for Norfolk Southern, said late Sunday six of 89 cars derailed, along with two locomotives, partially spilling the load of coal.

There were no injuries, he said, and the cause of the derailment is still under investigation.

“We are planning on resuming operations late tomorrow (Monday), but we don’t have a timeline right now,” he said.
