State police are looking for the driver of a black 1978 Ford Mustang who led them on a chase that covered two interstate highways before crossing into West Virginia near Wheeling early Sunday.
Police initially received a report about 1:30 a.m. of a motorist driving erratically on Interstate 79 near the Waynesburg exit. State police spotted the vehicle near the Lone Pine exit, traveling at a high speed and swerving from lane to lane.
Trooper Scott Shell initiated a traffic stop at the Laboratory exit in South Strabane Township. The driver stopped briefly before speeding off. The Mustang went from I-79 north to Interstate 70 westbound. Speeds reached at least 110 mph as the car continued west on I-70. The driver also continued to swerve around other traffic.
As the pursuit continued into West Virginia, Ohio County (W.Va.) deputies and Wheeling police put spike strips on the highway. The passenger tires on the Ford were deflated.
Police said the driver fled from the car, ran down a hill and crossed a shallow stream. The area was searched, but the driver was not located.
The driver is described as a white man, about 40 years old and standing 5-foot-10 to 6 feet tall.
