BENTLEYVILLE – Bentworth School Board is considering a 2-mill real estate tax increase to balance the district’s proposed 2014-15 budget.
The tentative $17.4 million spending plan includes a $1.2 million surplus, district records show.
District business manager Deb Babirad said increases in retirement benefits are mostly to blame for the tax increase, which could be lowered by the time the board adopts the budget June 16.
Bentworth also must pay nearly $500,000 in cyber school tuition. Teacher salaries, benefits and education supplies are expected to cost taxpayers $7 million next term, Babirad said.
The district is expected to receive $6.3 million in local taxes and $9.4 million in state subsidies.
The tax rate stands at 120 mills, with 1 mill earning the district $40,800.
