The Chartiers Creek annual walk through the North Franklin Wetlands is scheduled for Sunday from 2 p..m until about 4 p.m. The group will meet in the parking lot next to the North Franklin Fire Company, 565 Sylvan Drive. Participants are asked to park on the west side of the lot, close to Franklin Farms Road.

Dr. Jason Kilgore, assistant professor in the Department of Biology at Washington & Jefferson College, will again lead this year’s Wetlands Walk. Kilgore’s doctorate is in plant physiology and ecology.

Kilgore will describe the important roles that wetlands fill, and will identify valuable wetland plants, along with signs of typical animal inhabitants of wetlands.

The Wetlands Walk, sponsored by the Chartiers Creek Watershed Association, was first held in 2004. It has proven to be a popular annual event for children, as well as adults.

Those who would like to join the walk are asked to sign up in advance. There is no charge, but the organizers need to know how many will participate. Call Beth Kahkonen at 724-503-4785 or email bethk@pawccd.org. Alternatively, those interested can sign up online at www.upperchartierscreek.org.
