Man dies after being hit by train

A North Belle Vernon man died a day after he was struck by a Norfolk Southern train in Speers.

Shaun Kovacs, 26, was pronounced dead at 2:20 a.m. Friday from multiple injuries to his head and body, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner.

Kovacs was flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital after being struck by the train about 7:25 a.m. Thursday behind Campy’s Pizza, 119 Route 88.

Charleroi Regional police referred additional comment on the investigation to the railroad. According to local media, two employees on the train were not injured.

Kovacs was a 2005 graduate of Belle Vernon Area High School.
