Chamber presents career days
The Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce recently presented the first annual Fifth Grade Career Day for students at Jefferson-Morgan Elementary and its 13th at Waynesburg Central Elementary.
The events are part of the chamber’s community service program and provides students at Jefferson-Morgan and Waynesburg Central the opportunity to explore various career possibilities.
Career awareness usually takes place at the elementary level and the purpose of career day is to expose students to a wide variety of careers and occupations. Professionals shared information about their specific career or vocation and offered ways for students to apply what they have learned in studying career choices by listening to and speaking with a professional. It is also a great way to hopefully spark an interest and thought process in the children of what their future might hold.
The Waynesburg Chamber has been involved with this event since 2001 at the Waynesburg Central Elementary School. After Melody Longstreth, executive director of the chamber spoke to a group of guidance counselors from all five county school districts, the event has expanded this year to Jefferson-Morgan and plans are already under way to add Graysville Elementary in 2015.
The students vote for their favorite presenter. Taking the top honors at Jefferson were Keri Cole and Cindy Collins from Waynesburg Animal Hospital and at Waynesburg, Officer Asa Winters and his K9 companion, Izzy, were the student favorite. These two teams will be honored at the upcoming Chamber of Commerce Membership Luncheon May 28 at Waynesburg University.
Others taking part were Chuck Trump, Katie Horr and Adam Coldren of First Federal Savings & Loan; Steve Barrett of the Greene County Messenger; Lisa Sowden of the Waynesburg Borough Police Department; Emily Bryan of Greene County Primary Care; Autumn Laskody of Autumn Woods Hair Care Studio; Christopher Sayler and Paulie Yeater of Strad Oil Field Service;, Dr. Amy Cink of Waynesburg Animal Hospital; Tim Seighman and Elizabeth Plaski of Alpha Natural Resources; and staff from EMS Southwest.
