Highmark changes CEOs after less than 2 years

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Highmark Inc., the state’s largest insurance company, is changing chief executive officers for the second time in less than two years.
The company on Wednesday announced William Winkenwerder Jr. is being replaced by David Holmberg. Holmberg has been with the firm for seven years and has been president of a division that includes dental, vision and stop-loss insurance companies.
Winkenwerder in June 2012 replaced Ken Melani who was fired after fighting with the husband of an employee with whom he was having an affair.
A Highmark spokesman says Holmberg was chosen by the company’s board to “accelerate” the company’s pace of change to make the company more consumer-oriented.
Highmark is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association that serves about 5 million members in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Delaware.
