CARMICHAELS – The annual track and field competition at Carmichaels Elementary Center is a highly anticipated event among students, faculty and parents in the district who cheer on the 300-plus students in fourth through sixth grades.

The event held earlier this week marked the last track and field competition at Carmichaels for physical education instructor, Susan Martin, who has been overseeing the event for more than 30 years at the elementary center.

The competition started in 1977 prior to the construction of the current elementary center. Students who attended the former Nemacolin, Crucible and Central elementary schools would be brought together for the two-day event. It was changed to a single-day track and field competition in 1991 after the new elementary center was completed.
