Man kills himself after SWAT standoff

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – An armed man suspected in a home invasion held a SWAT team at bay for more than two hours Sunday before fatally shooting himself in the head, Columbus police said.

The 44-year-old was tracked down in Columbus after a home invasion and burglary in Obetz Sunday morning, police said. Police said he ran to a nearby pond and sat there from 11:15 a.m. to around 2 p.m. as police tried to negotiate with him to surrender.

The man eventually laid down his gun, but then lunged for it and a SWAT officer shot him in the leg, according to Sgt. Rich Weiner. Weiner said the man then got a hold of the gun again and shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at 7:28 p.m. at Grant Hospital.

Weiner said the man’s name wasn’t being released pending notification of his family.

Columbus Police said that the officers involved with received mandated psychological support counseling. The incident remained under investigation.
