WAYNESBURG – The Greene County sheriff’s office has received multiple reports that citizens are being contacted by individuals claiming to be deputy sheriffs who request personal, identifying information and attempt to solicit money.

On several occasions, residents were told they owe back taxes or fines and threatened with arrest or property seizure if they refuse to provide credit card information over the phone.

“This is a scam,” said Greene County Sheriff Brian Tennant. “The Greene County sheriff’s office does not collect debt over the telephone and deputies are not authorized to obtain credit card information,” he said. “Additionally, sheriff’s deputies do not arrest for failure to pay taxes.”

Tennant said if anyone receives a call from someone claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy, call the sheriff’s office at 724-627-7207 to verify their identity.

“Do not provide any financial information over the phone to anyone claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy,” Tennant said.
