Charleroi envisions new marina
CHARLEROI – A team focusing on reviving downtown Charleroi envisions a new marina at the Monongahela River, one complete with a restaurant and boat maintenance building at the former high school football stadium.
The attraction also would have a kayak rental business, bait shop, walking trail to the river and gasoline station for boats, according to the plan announced Monday.
“It’s a way to envision what could happen,” borough manager Donn Henderson said.
Charleroi recently completed a business district revitalization plan.
The plan grew out of an advisory group, Revive 2016, which formed in March 2013 to create economic development strategies.
Henderson said the borough has been in negotiations to obtain the stadium property on Second Street from Charleroi Area School District. It also is seeking a corporate sponsor for the project, he said.
“The final development might look quite different, but the group was focused on having a foundation for the future,” he said.
The borough is hosting a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, prior to its 6 p.m. council meeting, to introduce and explain the plan.
Funding from the Benedum Foundation and technical assistance from the Mon Valley Initiative helped to complete the study.
