The state Public Utility Commission will hold a public hearing Thursday on West Penn Power’s request for a rate increase. The hearing will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at American Legion Post 175, 168 Park Ave., Washington.

West Penn Power is proposing to increase distribution rates by $115.5 million or 8.4 percent. The bill for an average residential customer would increase from $92.47 to $106.09, or 14.9 percent, said state Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson.

Snyder said she submitted testimony on what she believes would be “extremely harmful rate increases.”

“The area has been plagued by extended power outages due to insufficient line maintenance by FirstEnergy and on-ground personnel,” Snyder wrote. “How much more can this company do to squeeze the hard-working homeowners and business owners in Western Pennsylvania?”
