HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Republicans in the Pennsylvania Senate have a new majority leader for the first time in eight years.

Sen. Don White confirmed Wednesday that Sen. Jake Corman of Centre County was picked over the current GOP floor leader, Sen. Dominic Pileggi, in a contest marked by personal rivalries and growing conservative unrest.

Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati of Jefferson County beat back a challenge and will retain his leadership post for at least two more years.

In the House, the Republican majority picked Rep. Dave Reed of Indiana County to be the new majority leader there.

The Republicans’ current floor leader, Allegheny County Rep. Mike Turzai, is expected to be elected speaker when the entire chamber votes in January.
