Henderson Avenue in Canton Township reopened to traffic at about 10 a.m. today after being closed since early September.

Henderson was closed to through traffic between Oak Grove Road/North Hewitt Avenue and Jefferson in early September so the bridge that carried the road across a former rail line could be removed. Backfill was placed in the void and a road built over it.

Traffic had been detoured between Routes 844 (Jefferson Avenue) and 18 (Henderson Avenue), leading many motorists to detour on Cortez Drive and other residential streets, and leading to numerous complaints.

The state Department of Transportation was not sure it could meet the scheduled reopening date of Friday and last week advised motorists that it might not reopen until just before Thanksgiving.
