MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia University’s president says a student found unconscious at a fraternity house has died.

President Gordon Gee says in a news release that 18-year-old Nolan Michael Burch died Friday.

Gee says “words cannot describe the heartache” that has overcome the university community.

Burch was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital after Morgantown police were called to the Kappa Sigma fraternity house late Wednesday night. Officers found someone performing CPR on Burch, who is from Williamsville, N.Y., a Buffalo suburb. Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston said Burch wasn’t breathing.

Burch’s injuries led the university to order a halt Thursday to social and pledging activities at fraternities and sororities.

On Nov. 6, 19 members of another fraternity were arrested on alcohol-related charges and the fraternity was suspended.

Police are investigating both incidents.
