A Monessen man was caught in the act of attempting to steal money from a cash register at M&D Bar in Charleroi on Friday night, according to police.

Ronald Griffey, 34, of 643 Knox Ave., was charged by Charleroi police with burglary, theft, trespassing, criminal mischief and receiving stolen property. He allegedly entered the bar on McKean Avenue at 10:42 p.m. after business hours.

Police said the bar owners were at home monitoring surveillance tapes when they saw a man inside the bar by the cash register. Griffey was apprehended at the bar and had $173 in his pocket that he had taken from the register, police said.

He was arraigned by District Judge Larry Hopkins and taken to Washington County jail on $20,000 bond.
