Garden club hosts ‘cookie walk’
CARMICHAELS – Rices Landing Town & Country Garden Club members hosted its annual cookie walk luncheon recently at the Carmichaels Activity Center.
This is the 11th year for the cookie walk, which is the fundraiser for the club’s annual $1,000 scholarship that is awarded to a graduating senior from one of the five county high schools. Two former scholarship recipients, Joshuah Dains (2011) is a senior at Waynesburg University, and Jeremy Baker (2013), a sophomore at Waynesburg University, attended and provided assistance at the event.
Patrons enjoyed a lunch of homemade soup and sandwich, fresh brewed coffee and a dessert choice of pie or cake.
As the tantalizing aroma of soup and coffee wafted through the air, patrons viewed the silent auction table featuring many themed baskets, birdhouse with seeds and fall table centerpieces. Displayed was a queen-sized quilt made and donated by member Marion Walker.
The winner of the quilt was Stephanie Pettit.
The 24-foot cookie table offered a wide variety of holiday cookies and candy displayed on plates and trays. As patrons walked down the line, they indicated their choices, which were then placed by a member into the patron’s cookie box.
Member Ralph Nicholson served as master of ceremonies.
Club member Linda Shefcheck won the title of Cookie Queen for baking the most cookies – 34 dozen.
“The success of our cookie walk is due to the great support it receives from patrons of the surrounding communities and businesses. They, too, wish to invest in the youth of our county,” said Kay Bair, president.
Town and County was organized in 1951 and is a member of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania (District X), National Garden Clubs Inc. and the Central Atlantic Division.
