McMURRAY – Peters Township School District will have two new principals at the helm.

The school board voted unanimously Monday to hire Gregory W. Marquis as principal at Pleasant Valley Elementary School and Robert Garvey as principal at Bower Hill Elementary School. Marquis, currently assistant principal at McMurray Elementary School, will be paid an annual salary of $89,000. The salary of Garvey, who is coming to Peters Township from the Bethel Park School District to replace Kelly L. Gustafson, was set at $92,000.

No official start date was set for either position. Director Sandra Gregg was absent from Monday’s meeting.

Each man spoke at the podium following his appointment, thanking the board for the opportunity and lightheartedly commenting on an arduous interview process, which drew laughter from board members and others attending the meeting.

Marquis, who previously was a third-grade teacher at Bower Hill Elementary for six years before becoming assistant principal at McMurray Elementary, said he was “looking forward to new opportunities.”

Marquis earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Westminster College and a master’s degree in administration and policy studies at the University of Pittsburgh.

Garvey is currently principal at Ben Franklin Elementary School in Bethel Park. He previously served as assistant principal at Neil Armstrong Middle School for two years. He taught fifth grade in Bethel Park for seven years prior.

Garvey holds his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s in education from Johns Hopkins University.
