East Bethlehem police Chief Mark Pompe said Thursday four bears seen around Fredericktown Wednesday apparently left the area.

Pompe said there were no additional sightings Thursday.

Fredericktown residents began to notify police of bear sightings about 2 p.m. Wednesday. Pompe said four bears were found roaming. Two were seen traveling together.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Game Commission was notified, and an officer came to Fredericktown to assess the situation.

Archery season for bears opened Monday, and Pompe said the animals probably were driven into the area as a result.

Police are asking people not to feed or approach bears. To report a sighting, call 911.
