Burglar hits closed athletic club
The owners of a building housing a former athletic club discovered Wednesday morning numerous sets of dumbbells were stolen when they went to show a prospective buyer exercise equipment.
The dumbbells were stolen from the former Alexander’s Athletic Club, 2403 Washington Road. The club closed in August 2013 and was purchased by Woodside Development Group as the future home of Washington Toyota.
Gary Flannery, Toyota general manager, and Anthony Marinelli of the Falconi Group, which is part of Woodside Development, discovered the break-in about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and found the equipment was stolen.
The two men showed North Strabane Township police the dumbbell racks in the gym, which were empty except for a few sets of dumbbells.
It appears the burglar or burglars entered the building through a door on one side of the building. Several doors inside the building also were propped open.
Detective John Wybranowski said evidence was collected at the scene and sent to the state police crime laboratory in Greensburg for analysis.
“They took a lot of dumbbells,” the detective said. “Stealing those took a great deal of time and effort.”
Anyone who might have seen suspicious activity or has heard of dumbbells being sold is asked to call township police at 724-746-8474.
