ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a 92-year-old Pennsylvania man told his son he planned to end his elderly wife’s suffering, then shot her in the head before killing himself.

The man was identified as Izak Waide of Allentown. The Lehigh County coroner ruled his death early Friday a suicide.

Police say his wife, 92-year-old Malka Waide, is expected to survive. She suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

Allentown police Capt. William Reinik reported that the couple’s son contacted authorities around 6:15 a.m. Friday. He said his father told him he was tired of seeing his wife in her condition and he was going to end her suffering. The son pleaded with his father but he hung up the phone.

Reinik says the shooting had already occurred the time police arrived.
