Residents of the Monongahela Valley and other areas of Washington County are getting calls from people claiming they are representatives of the Internal Revenue Service.

The caller tells the person that it is their final notice and if they do not pay what is owed, the IRS will sue them.

“Our telephones have been ringing off the hook today,” said Monongahela police Chief Brian Tempest. “People shouldn’t panic. It is not the IRS.”

Tempest said that the IRS does not sue people, but rather attaches wages to get money owed. He said the agency also does not contact people by telephone, but through the mail.

Most of the calls seem to be coming from 202-239-1231. Tempest advised residents not to even answer the telephone if that number appears on caller ID.
