• Date: Nov. 17
• Action: The board awarded a contract for the purchase and installation of the McMurray Elementary School surveillance project to Dagostino Electronic Services in the amount of $65,586; and a contract for the purchase and installation of the high school surveillance project to Dagostino in the amount of $157,960. The funds for both projects will come from the capital projects.
The board voted to appoint John Yocca as a school district representative to Peters Township Parks and Recreation Board. He will fill a seat left vacant by Joseph Maize for a three-year term beginning in January.
• Discussion: The board presented members of the state championship boys soccer team with certificates. Coach Bob Dyer said not only have the 32 members of the team become a source of pride for the school district on the soccer field but serve as great ambassadors off the field as well.
Dr. Jamison Hardy, chairman of the finance committee, said the budget process is under way but no definite committee meeting dates have been set.
Local businessman and substitute teacher Jerry Strennen told the board he was “offended” and finds it “not fair” to have recently learned that hours given substitutes have been limited. He also took exception to what he called the low pay of $85 a day for subs. The board agreed to discuss the matters with district administration.
The board also heard from Amy Grealish of McMurray about the Keystone Exams and graduation requirements, expressing fears that some students may fall between the cracks. While she said teachers and administrators are “very well equipped”, she said she agrees with others across the state who are calling for the elimination of the requirements because they are “taxing and stressing”. Director Sue Smith said the school district has worked “long and hard” on the exams. She added that the district is faring very well and has instituted remedial classes.
• Next meeting: The reorganization meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1, followed by the regular meeting at 6:45 p.m.
