Cleveland crowd protests after police shoot boy
CLEVELAND (AP) — Several hundred demonstrators sitting in the street have blocked traffic at a major intersection in downtown Cleveland while chanting in support of a 12-year-old boy who was fatally shot by a police officer.
Tamir Rice was killed after police responded to a 911 call Saturday about a gun at a playground. Tuesday’s demonstration comes as people across the country are protesting a grand jury’s decision not to indict a white Ferguson, Missouri, officer who killed a black 18-year-old.
Police were observing the Cleveland protest and had vehicles in nearby intersections.
Police say Tamir was shot after he pulled what appeared to be a handgun from his waistband. It was a plastic replica.
Attorneys for Tamir’s family want the complete surveillance video of the confrontation to be released to the public.
