YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Hundreds turned out to pay tribute to the late James A. Traficant Jr., the former Ohio congressman who served time in prison after his conviction on corruption and racketeering charges.

More than 500 people attended the tribute Sunday at a performing arts center in Youngstown. They remembered him as a man of the people who worked hard to help his beloved and beleaguered city and the Mahoning Valley.

The 73-year-old Democrat died in September, several days after a vintage tractor tipped over on him at his family’s farm. The former University of Pittsburgh quarterback and county sheriff spent seven years in prison after his expulsion from his House seat in 2002. His conviction made him only the second person expelled from Congress since the Civil War.
