Plumbers performing soldering work on pipes inside a Union Township house ignited a fire Tuesday afternoon that caused “severe” damage to the residence, Finleyville fire Chief Jeff Lawrence said.

The fire at 318 Stone Church Road started shortly before 1 p.m. and traveled to the attic, causing heavy damage in that area of the house, Lawrence said.

The plumbers and residents, who were home at the time, escaped uninjured, Lawrence said.

Fire crews from Elrama, New Eagle, Library, Bentleyville, Jefferson Hills, Pleasant Hills and Bethel Park assisted Finleyville with the call and remained on scene for about three hours.

Lawrence said the fire has been ruled an accident.
