CARMICHAELS – Carmichaels Borough town square will be filled with the aroma of cooked cabbage Saturday as the community holds its annual Pig Fest, short for Pigs in a Blanket Festival.
The event has been held for 16 years and was started as a way for the community to hold a fall festival focusing on the area’s ethnic traditions, according to organizers.
The early festivals were sponsored by the borough and a local planning committee. Sponsorship of the event in subsequent years passed to Carmichaels-Cumberland Township Fire Company, the former Communities that Care program, the Carmichaels Area Band Boosters, and now the Carmichaels American Legion Post 400.
The festival celebrates a traditional staple of many European families, variously known as pigs in a blanket, cabbage rolls, stuffed cabbage or halupki. Other food items that will be available for purchase include, halushki (cabbage and noodles), pulled pork and barbecue from Barbecue on the Move.
This year’s event will feature an arts and crafts sale, Chinese auction, face painting and entertainment including a DJ.
The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Streets at the town square will be closed at 7 a.m. Saturday to allow for vendors to set up for the day.
